Yesterday my friends Wendy & Jason & I went to Point Defiance Zoo to see the Polar Bears. . . and I was thinking that realistically this would probably be my only opportunity to take a photograph of a polar bear. And then I started thinking why does that have to be so?
So, I'm going to be working on a list of photographic safaris I want to take in the next year, and a larger list for the ones I want to take over the next 10 years.
I'm not sure about traveling somewhere cold enough to find these magnificent beasts, but I am fairly sure that Africa and Australia are definitely going to make the list.
So I was wondering, if money weren't an option, where would you go on photographic safari?

I have always wanted to go and get some shots in Spain during the running of the bulls.

You've taken the word of my mouth matto, and I've faced a young bull once in an arena, should that ever happen again I definitely wouldn't want it to be in the crowded streets of Pamplona

I'd go on a photo safari in the deserts of Africa before touring Southeast Asia, and then returning to Eastern Europe.

"I'm not sure about traveling somewhere cold enough to find these magnificent beasts"
It is not that bad if you really want to see them. You could fly to Barrow, Alaska and they have tours that drives out of the town to where there is a good chance of seeing them. I have not done that myself but have been thinking about it. It is a small town but not that out there as you would think.
I would like to visit South America mountains or maybe the Swiss Alps.

We were supposed to go to Thailand next February but, unfortunately, the health of my mother-in-law (and designated teenager-sitter) went downhill. So we'll probably have to see how the girls are at volcano/jungle hiking in Costa Rica.
I don't have to dream, I love my life ;-P

New Zealand and Antarctica for me.
Or else Argentina, Chile and Antarctica.
I have very preliminary plans to go and do it, but sadly the harsh realities of life and also the harsh realities of economics intrude on my fantasies

Tokyo, Thailand, and Portugal are top on my list right now. Sadly, I almost got to spend a month in Thailand for FREE this summer on a grant, but the funding fell through. I think i'll always be bitter about that!

this semester I'm concentrating on small towns of the Bay Area. I want to capture the essense of towns with three streets and the people that live there.
The bad thing is, these towns are so small that I can't find them on maps usually. It also helps me to get out of the city and explore.

i'm with your waitress on the 50 states idea - i'd love to be able to do that some day.
i've always wanted to photo safari in china, tibet, argentina, cuba just to name a few. for now i'll stick w/ europe (heading to krakow, poland this weekend!)

October 4th, 2004 at 11:11 am
India, Costa Rica, Australia, Italy would be my next four trips. Sigh.
October 4th, 2004 at 11:13 am
iceland. but it also tops my list of places i'd like to visit, photo or no photo.
October 4th, 2004 at 12:20 pm
Alaska. I've always had the feeling it would suit me particularly well.

Anyone comes to Atlanta, I got the beer.
Anyone going to Ghana, I got your hookup.

I'm totally with Noah. Alaska. And Costa Rica. And somewhere to see whales and dolphins. I am not that keen on seeing animals in a hot environment, especially Africa. Dunno why, just because I don't like too much sun, all day long.
Mprints : I just came back from New Orleans. Totally worth the visit, and the 600 pics I took talk for themselves. I loved it!
See the swamp here : http://stillmemory.ca/images/honey_island/viewer.swf
And my best New Orleans pics here :

Sorry for going OT, but I keep wanting to go back, by any possible means!

i've actually been thinking of that; the perfect photo safari... for me, it'd be a world-wide visiting-other-photbloggers-trip. that'd be great fun!:)
October 4th, 2004 at 5:35 pm
Japan I think.
Primarily also because I want to visit there so badly.
October 4th, 2004 at 11:13 pm
I think my dream safari would not so much be going somewhere but being with someone. Id love to have an entire 24 hours to photograph someone .. From the time they get out of bed until they turn off the lights at night. President Bush, The Pope, Trump, Bill Gates.. the list goes on.
October 5th, 2004 at 1:44 am
Noah, can I come too? =)
October 5th, 2004 at 2:24 am
Not really a safari, but the best place for bird and whale whaching....THE WONDERFUL CAPOVERDE. Enter to my site and visit the last reportage of Caboverde 2004!
October 5th, 2004 at 4:08 pm
in no particular order:
Alaska during Northern Lights
St Petersburg, Russia
The tiny mountian villages in Italy
Dharamsala, India (the city where the Dalai Llama lives)
anywhere in New Zealand
the small towns in Japan as far away as possible from Tokyo
Portland OR & Seattle WA
Flyfishermen in Idaho & Montana
Totonato and Vancouver
Patagonia Chile
Havana Cuba
Austin TX during SXSW
Mexico City, Mexico
Novia Scotia
now if I could only finish my time-traveling transporter-beam, I'd be a happy camper

South Africa!!!! Excelent photo ops and not just for animals but the bush, the light, the colours and the huge sky.
