Looking to Sell

Wed, October 27th, 2004 by Nick F

So here's the low-down: I hate the Canon Powershot Pro-1. It is possibly the most disappointing thing I've ever purchased (besides the Ashlee Simpson CD) and I absolutely need to sell it. So here are my two options: 1) selling it on E-Bay, 2) selling it to someone through FerociousCheese or PhotoBlogs. I can't decide which. I need your help!

Also, what camera should I buy instead? I'd love for it to be digital and I'd love for it to be wonderful and lovely and not be annoying like the Canon Powershot Pro-1. I should be able to use the money I received from selling with Pro-1 to buy the new one (give or take a couple hundred).

I'm desperate here, guys and gals. Tips?

Addendum: The Canon Powershot Pro-1 is just bland for me. I feel like I could be doing so much more with it, but I feel like I'm carrying around a $400,000,000 piece of china and I would much rather carry around the Canon Digital Rebel than that klunky, expensive little thing. Also, 8 Megapixels would be much better -- to me -- in a Digital SLR rather than a point-and-shoot. I hate auto-white balance, I'd much rather control shutter speed and aperture on my own.

Basically, it just reeks of badness.

I'd be selling it on eBay. You'll get the biggest pool of potential buyers there. But can you give more detail about why you don't like it?

Ashlee Simpson. Is it really that shocking? I must be showing my age since Milli Vanilli comes to mind. The media is putting way too much attention on her over this. Did anyone get rid of all Dixie Chicks last year? Now we are supposed to ditch Ashlee? A trash can might work.

yeah nick what's wrong with it? i was thinking i'd like one!

Oh no... stay away from it. As such, telling people it stinks probably won't get you a sale on this site or your photoblog, so I would recommend eBay - there's always someone looking for this stuff, and you'll get better dollar than you would here.

The 8-megapixel consumer cams that were put out recently were all considered dissapointments. Hell, just try them at your local electronic store like Best Buy, and you'll see the poor crap in action. The Canon PowerShot Pro1, Nikon Coolpix 8700, and Sony DSC-F828 were just bad... well, they're decent, but not for the price and target audience. If you really want a non DSLR that's 8mp, go for the Konica Minolta DiMAGE A2.

Nick, I would recommend checking out http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/ if you really need some help in getting a cam...

This reminds me of Brandon's Wiki post of camera brands. A nice feature would have the users here rate their camera (1 out of 10) and list the pro's and con's... might help out...

Ooh, I just bought a Canon PowerShot Pro 1. I would have bought yours from you, had I known you were selling it!

I've never had a digital SLR, so I can't really compare and say whether and how much of a disappointment this camera is, but so far I've really been enjoying it. But it's really a learning experience for me. I didn't want a real SLR because I didn't want such a steep learning curve, nor the expense of buying the camera body and all the lenses I would want.

However, there is a lot of manual control on this camera. You said that you'd "much rather control shutter speed and aperture on (your) own", and I'm confused, since you can do that on this camera. Is there something I'm missing?

My two main complaints are that:
    1) the pop-up flash pops up so fast and loud that scares the sh*t out of me every time, right as I'm in the middle of taking a picture (so now I avoid using the flash), and
    2) the super macro feature is embedded in one of the menus, while the regular macro is a button you can press on the camera itself.

Anyway, I'm sorry to hear you're not happy with the camera. Are you sure you can't just return it?

One of the reasons why I got a Canon G5 instead of a 8mp camera like the Pro1 or A2 early this year is because I was thinking of investing in a D-SLR like the Canon 20D that just came out last month.

Seems to have everything including 8mp and looks a bit more compact than the 10D. So I'd be going for the 20D.

In the meantime, I like the compactness of the G5 so I'd probably keep it for a wee bit longer.

I recently switched over from shooting with a Canon 10D to the Pro1 for two reasons – the smaller size and the flip and twist LCD. These two items are critical to my shooting style and were non-negotiable when I was camera shopping (the 8MP resolution and better lens were nice features as well). I shoot mostly while cruising around on my bike so I’m most comfortable with a relatively small, unobtrusive camera that fits in a waist pack. And the flip and twist LCD – well, that’s just the coolest thing since sliced bread and I use it constantly to compose off angle shots without having to lie on my belly or climb a tree..

Admittedly, the Pro1 is a little clunky and doesn’t seem as intuitive as the earlier G series cameras. I definitely wouldn’t call it the perfect camera but I’ve gotten used to it and am finding it easier to use and I don’t regret my decision to buy it. It’s got plenty of white balance options and all the manual features (shutter speed, aperture) that I would expect on a pricey camera. I agree that the Super-Macro is in an odd place but once you set it a few times (Menu, up, up, up, Set) it gets more natural. Also, you can set the flash so it only pops up when you want it to (pg. 65 in the manual, Set Flash Pop-Up to Off).

I would’ve bought it from you!

I tried the Pro-1 at Circuit City and wasn't very impressed either. I'm used to my 10D. Besides, electronic veiwfinders just don't do it for me. Glad you brought up the Digital Rebel. I think that might be a good alternative. It's 6mp instead of 8, but that's still very good. It's around the same price as what you'd get for the Pro-1 on eBay. B&H is selling the Rebel w/ 18-55mm kit lens and 1gb 80x Lexar card for $835 after rebate. That sounds pretty good to me.

but canon really does not give a toss about their customers..
But they are so concerned about thier reputation that they destroy any bad feedbackabout them. God wake up People!
