Christmas Day

Fri, December 17th, 2004 by djn1

I know that:

i) not all of us celebrate Christmas.

ii) not all of us put up a shot every day, and ...

iii) not all us can put stuff up that we shoot that day.

... but for those who do all three, is anybody interested in picking a collective theme for Christmas Day? I'm not really sure why I'm suggesting this, other that in response to the generally festive feel of the season, but I thought it might be interesting to share some aspect of the day with one another.

Oh, and there's no Photo Friday on the 24th so for anyone likely to suffer horrible withdrawal symptoms this may well be an ideal opportunity ;-)

Sounds like fun, Dave. Any thoughts?

Surprise might be a good theme. Gifts may be a bit obvious, but the colors and shapes might be a nice exploration. Or if we think of our families as our gifts (or for that matter, talent and creativity)...

These are just off the cuff. Anyone else?

  2. djn1 Says:

I was thinking of something like 'joy' or 'goodwill'. Something general, but something that would capture the flavour of the season.

So just to be clear, we're talking about a common theme for the picture we post that will appear on December 26th, something we (probably) took on the 25th, right?

I like 'Gift' as a theme that is general enough.

I really enjoy Christmas, and it should be extra special this year since we have a 3 year old. But I also see it as a time of excess (stress, packaging, expectations...). Maybe on the 27th we could all post a picture from the theme 'excess'. I have a category of "Think" with only three pictures in it; it's a good time of year to add another one.

I haven't been in a mall on Boxing Day in a LONG time, but certainly there must be more than enough content for that second theme, no?

I like joy. Something to inspire all the keen portrait photographers (not me, sigh) out there.

I was thinking of something we could put up on Christmas day, but I guess it depends on what time people normally post. I tend to put my stuff around 10PM (GMT), but deciding on something for the 26th is fine too.

I think it's a great idea and would be a lot of fun to see what everyone comes up with. Maybe the theme should simply be "Christams"? Almost like one of the "Day in the Life" series...

  7. Greg Says:

yeah - a christmas or holiday theme would be cool - i love to do it. - count me in.

  8. djn1 Says:

ok, let's go for "Christmas" then, with the emphasis on providing some sort of documentary of the day.

  9. Cameron Says:

Sounds like fun, and I guess we would all be taking photographs anyway!

Good morning and Merry Christmas everyone from Australia.
Where were we going to post the links to the images David?
I was thinking (if Brandon thought it was OK) we might be able to collate a page of links for the Christmas theme on the wiki? Any how without further ado, here is my first Christmas Photoblog Offering:

    Happy New Year, too!

  12. Cameron Says:

Thanks Matt, happy New Year to you too! Nice Christmas images there Matt, I love those market shots.
We've driven 100km to and from my wife's uncle's for Christmas lunch, now my family are coming over to our house for tea. The day is still progressing!

Here is my picture to get into the spirit of Christmas:

Hopefully I'll have something with more of an original slant on the theme to post tomorrow (and an 'excess' picture after that?)

Have a wonderful (and safe) day.

  15. djn1 Says:

Having suggested this idea I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that most of my attempts today have been crap but I'll put one up in a little while ;-)

Cameron and Matt, your shots are great.

  16. matt Says:

I think they're wonderful, David. Merry Christmas.

  17. Frank Says:

    My Christmas shot is up:

I faced my typical indoor lighting challenges: blow it out with flash, or take two thousand shots at different speeds and apertures in the hope that ONE will be OK.

  18. Cameron Says:

I think they're all wonderful so far (not commenting on my own, that's for others to decide) This exercise is about capturing the spirit of Christmas through other peoples camera lenses from around the world rather than a photographic technical exercise anyway, I thought. (I hope so because I failed badly in the technical stakes!)
I'm hoping to see some more photographs posted once everyone recovers from their celebrations. I had a chuckle when I saw yours Frank - we had an identical ginger-bread house at the beginning of my family get-together. The poor house was totally demolished and consumed before 3 hours were out. (I love ginger-bread)
