Photography resolutions

Wed, December 29th, 2004 by roderick -

The New Year is almost upon us, and you know what that means
– resolutions. In this month’s issue of Popular Photography, there is a section
listing some people's photography resolutions for the year 2005. Here are some of mine:

  • Take a photography class.
  • Save up for a dSLR and film scanner.
  • Get more comfortable with darkrooms, digital and
    traditional.
  • Carry a camera EVERYWHERE I go.

What are your photography resolutions for 2005?

Rod

Get out of my comfort zone more often.

Great topic, Rod. My photographic resolutions are: to do a better job of telling a story with a series of photos; to photograph more people in natural enviromental settings; add more writing to accompany my photos.

Nice idea, I need to make some:

    - Get out of comfort zone definitely
    - Stop spending money on processing and get a decent scanner that can handle MF negs
    - Don't take such random images, build up themes and individual projects
    - Redesign my site!
    - Don't spend all my money on lenses :)

My photographic resolutions are currently 2048 x 1536, but hopefully that'll all change when I get that dSLR I've been saving up for. :)

    10,000 photographs in 2005.

    - Work on exposure as to not require so much post-processing.
    - Attempt to master the 20D
    - Keep up with a photo every day for my site!

Great question...Already lots of good responses, too... I'll add:

1.) Take more pictures of people - I just got a lensbaby and suprisingly I LIKE it for portraits.

2.) Learn more about lighting, what a difference it can make.

    3.) Print more pictures.

4.) NO pictures of cats on my daily photo-blog (I think I will break that for my '26 things' page, but NOT on seems Artless itself)

5.) Help the world towards world peace with my photos (not sure how, exactly, but that seems like a good resolution, no?)

    1. carry on with film (easy enough as I dont have a digital!)
    2. use my rangefinder and polaroid as much as possible
    3. get to a darkroom to carry on printing, I did a course earlier this year which I enjoyed but never followed up on the darkroom practise (slapped wrists)
    4. visit canada and vienna
    5. finish the london marathon

  17. Cameron said:

    My resolutions are to:
    Try and do more portraits.
Teach myself more digital darkroom skills.
    Save for a DSLR.
To also get out of my "Comfort Zone"
Go "Outback" at some stage to grab some nice desert photographs.
    To simply shoot better photographs.

  18. djn1 said:

    Mine are:

    1) to be more focussed. The 'image a day' thing is fine but I need to do more projects/themes/stories/and so on.
    2) get better an night photography - it's something I want to master.
    3) take more portraits/people shots.
    4) take more keepers.
    5) get more experience of artificial lighting (rather than just bouncing the flash off the ceiling).
    6) and like everyone else, get out of my 'comfort zone'.

    additions to my previous statement

I want to complete a photo essay of some type

and have a month dedicated to black and white

    Very good responses from everyone!
    Here are mine:
[1] As with everyone else, get out of my comfort zone. Try to be less afraid of taking photos of strangers.
[2] Learn more portraits and studio shots. Test out photos with flash, different studio lights, and the like.
[3] Take more photojournalistic photos, fewer "ohh pretty colors!" photos.
    [4] Shoot some film.
[5] Shoot a photo essay of some sort.
[6] Save up for new lenses =)

    1. archive my digital images in a more timely manner and more efficiently
    2. shoot more sets and less candids
    3. shoot more candid kids
    4. buy an L series lens
    5. book some weddings
    6. travel
    7. get a compact digital pns
    8. shoot ramps at Xgames
    9. shoot larger concerts/acts
    10. work on an exhibit or 2

  22. sq said:

wow, since i'm brand new to taking pictures, i have lots to learn and could make dozens of resolutions. For starters, I'd like to take more candid photos of people in public settings; work more with color (i'm finding b/w to be really helpful for learning composition & lighting, and color to be much more challenging); try and put together some thematic series, take a crack at using photography more deliberatly to express ideas or convey a message; try to get a better understanding of exposure; and lastly - take more photos and post more!

  23. Adam said:

    1 Take more people pictures
    2 Bring my tripod
    3 Get that portfolio together
4 Shoot more on film, or at the very least finish and print that half-finished roll that's been in the Rolleiflex for 2 years
5 Lose 10 pounds so I can fit through smaller holes in fences

  28. rannie said:

    Hmmm interesting....

    1) shoot more film, this was on my list last year.
    2) shoot more medium format
    3) use more variety of my cameras in my collection
    4) de-stress my life
    5) get my print profilo together (still)
    6) get my online portfolio together
    7) shoot more concerts again
    8) shoot differently
    9) focus on themes
    10) bring photobloggers together!!!!

    1) Become more technically skilled
    2) Stop second guessing whether or not to take the photo and just do it (ie. shooting people)
    3) Experiment more
    4) Archive my photos properly (both digital and film)
    5) Carry a tripod everywhere
    6) Redesign my site
    7) Avoid buying new equipment as much as possible and actually *use* what I already own
    8) Set up a separate site/area for concert photos...I have way too many archived that I haven't used
    9) Specifically set up more shots, rather than shooting random things
    10) Continue to have fun...once the fun stops, I'm done

My main photographic resolution for 2005 is to somehow become more creative with my photography. Much of my stuff seems rather orthodox and somewhat lacking in 'depth' and sensibility. A majority of the photographers I admire seem to have a distinct style or vision - a particular way of looking at and interpreting the world. I'm still looking for a style of my own.

On a more practical note, I'd like to become more organised with my cataloguing, storage and backup.

I'd also like to explore the possibilities of film - particularly black and white. If anyone can recommend a cheap(ish) film setup I'd be most interested. I have Canon lenses, so I'm thinking of something like a second hand Canon EOS 50E…

I'm moving to from Annapolis, MD to Anchorage, AK in 6 weeks. I could put down a half dozen easy (cheesy) resolutions. Take photos of Denali. Duh. The hard ones? Save up and get that DSLR, shoot a few rolls on a single theme, get those 10 rolls of traditional B&W that are sitting around losing their latent image developed, and get a photoblog up and running.

If I make a few bucks, and meet some new people along the way, that's great, too.

. Finish processing my shots from my trip to Asia. A little less than 1000 to go through - not easy.
. Redesign my site. Just way too minimalist now.
. Find the 'perfect bag'. Currently using a fake Diesel bag I got for 7 bucks in Thailand.
. Pinhole photography. I've seen some amazing stuff and I dig the whole grassroots homemade aspect of it.
. Collaboration with others. There's a bunch of us in NYC, why not?
    . Take a class?
    . Keep on shootin' ;)
