Blog Archive for December, 2004

Links Archive

Sat, December 18th, 2004 by Joe Cunningham

For about a year now, I've made it part of my morning routine to have my browser open over 250 photoblogs at once (tabbed browsing rocks) and then I go make eggs while the pages load. For breakfast, instead of staring at the back of a cereal box, I tab through these sites like it's a daily photography magazine. I bookmark the best images; the ones I want to remember, and I link to the ten most recent ones on my site.

Now that we're at year's end, I thought I might point you all to the archive of over 400 photographs I have linked to since December of 2003. They are compiled in reverse-chronological order. The oldest is at the bottom. New ones will continue to appear at the top. This page will remain up until New Year's Day. I am aware that many of the links are broken. Sites go down. Domain names change. Please only report broken links if you can tell me the correct URL for a given image.

Here is the Archive. Enjoy.

Christmas Day

Fri, December 17th, 2004 by djn1

I know that:

i) not all of us celebrate Christmas.

ii) not all of us put up a shot every day, and ...

iii) not all us can put stuff up that we shoot that day.

... but for those who do all three, is anybody interested in picking a collective theme for Christmas Day? I'm not really sure why I'm suggesting this, other that in response to the generally festive feel of the season, but I thought it might be interesting to share some aspect of the day with one another.

Oh, and there's no Photo Friday on the 24th so for anyone likely to suffer horrible withdrawal symptoms this may well be an ideal opportunity ;-)

DD4 Relaunch / London Photobloggers

Fri, December 17th, 2004 by richard partridge

Just a note to say that my photoblog has been relaunched - Dicksdaily is a photo a day site (I actually take the photos each day too!) and has been running now for over three years - a picture for each of those days taken on each of those days .... www.dicksdaily.co.uk

Enough self-promotion! - There was a thread a while back about a London Photobloggers meet - I just wondered if there was still any interest for this - certainly in the new year I would consider organising this - aswell as a london.photoblogs.org site .... I think these things are a little bit much for me to handle on my own - so would anyone else be interested in these things?

Why not email me at dicksdaily[remove]@gmail.com and let me know?

Hope you enjoy the new DD!

Raw file converting

Fri, December 17th, 2004 by Sara Ang

This might've been posted about before. Infact, it probably has. If so, just direct me to where in the archives.

I was just curious which programmes people use for RAW file converting? I'm a proud owner of a D70 and recently started shooting RAW. I've downloaded a plugin from adobe.com that lets me convert my files using Photoshop CS. (though I only have a trial version of it right now. *hint hint*)

I find this works really well for me but I still want to know if there are any better alternatives. I know of at least one other good programme, Nikon Capture, but it's really expensive to buy.

So yeah, Nikonists and Canonists and whatever you are; are there better ways?

#1,000

Thu, December 16th, 2004 by Jessyel Ty Gonzalez

I'm not trying to embarass David here, but I just wanted to pass along the exciting news that Chromasia (profile) has just received its 1,000th favorite on the site!

David's always been an inspiration, and a huge force into why many of us started photoblogging, or continue to do so. If anyone deserves this, it's him. So congrats buddy... it's quite an accomplishment, and we're all proud. I'll go and buy you a cake soon :-)

Spacing Photoblog.

Wed, December 15th, 2004 by photojunkie

Spacing is a magazine that explores and exploits public space in Toronto. Last week they celebrated the release of their third issue ; Work and Play.

Spacing is pleased to annouce the release of its third issue -- Work & Play in Toronto's public spaces. From buskers to street preachers to early morning bird rescuers to graffiti cops, Spacing examines the impact of work and play on our outdoor urban environment, and how people bring the city to life 24 hours a day.

A variety of Toronto's top photobloggers are showcased: Sam Javanrouh (Daily Does of Imagery), Matt O'Sullivan (thenarrative.net), Rannie Turingan (photojunkie.ca), Jonathan Day-Reiner (groundglass.ca), and Davin Risk (lowresolution.com).

The issue also includes an article on photoblogging (which will be online shortly) accompanied by a special Spacing Photoblog which I will be running through the month of December.

Check it out.

LIVE!!! - Chicago Photobloggers - LIVE!!!

Tue, December 14th, 2004 by bob smith

Chicago Photobloggers is now LIVE! Come check us out!

A special thanks to Brandon for the opportunity to be part of Photoblogs.org, and saving a space for us at the table. A big thanks to Rannie for coordinating everything - and providing the inspiration.

If not for Rod at Photovox, we never would have launched. Rod did all the heavy lifting with design -- I'm eternally grateful for his help and support. Rod did an outstanding job -- our site has a wondeful Chicago-like feel to it. Maybe Rod can do something about designing a winning Chicago sports team??

I'd like to invite everyone to drop us a line at chicagophotobloggers@gmail.com with any suggestions -- or if you're from Chicagoland and would like to be linked, just let us know!

Stop by and visit. We're glad to have you!

Thanks everyone.

Best of Photoblogs 2004

Mon, December 13th, 2004 by photojunkie

I already know I am crazy for taking this on again, but really I can't help myself, I really enjoy taking on these challenges.

Last year, I put together a gallery of best of 2003 images. It was a gallery of shots which represented personal bests from various people in the photoblogging community.

I plan to do this again for a 2004 edition.

Here is the details

1) It must be a photo that was taken this calendar year and posted this calendar year on your blog.

2) Choosing your "Best photo" is totally your choice, whether it be a personal favorite or a photo that recieved the most comments on your site over the year.

3) Only one submission per person.

I will need the following information for your submission.

a)  your photo.  Please no larger than 700 pixels in width.

b) a brief description of why you choose this photo.

c) the name of your site

d) The date your originally posted this image as well as the permalink to that post.

All submissions can be sent to photojunkie@gmail.com with the subject line "Best of 2004"

Submissions will be open till December 31st, 2004.

The gallery will probably go up some where between the 25th and new years.

Cheers
Rannie

UPDATE: Here is a blogroll of photobloggers who have already submitted their best of 2004 photo.

Same object, Different approaches

Fri, December 10th, 2004 by Frank Lynch

Joe Holmes and I live nearby, our children go to the same school, and while my Daddy can whup his Daddy, it's always fun to see our different takes on the same objects in the neighborhood. Brooklyn NY is large, but the overlap is fairly frequent, and it's nice to see the different approaches. Approaches matter: I've seen people's photoblog posts of art receive comments like "well, yeah, all you did was take a picture of someone else's work." Photography goes beyond "all you did..."

A recent occurrence was over the entrance to a high school. Here's joe's nyc and here's mine. It's not just the elements, it's also the composition.

Are there other pairings which come to your minds? Last I checked there were more photobloggers in Toronto than former NY Mets 3rd basemen, so there must be other great examples of overlap, showing different approaches.

Post them!
