Whitby Psych Slideshow

Sun, December 5th, 2004 by Jay

I think most of us in Toronto have been to Whitby Psychiatric Hospital.  It is a great place to shoot, and Mat at http://thephotomat.blog-city.com has put together a great slideshow of our trip out there a couple of weeks ago.  Be sure to check it out.

Reasons

Sun, December 5th, 2004 by Kjetil M. Bergem

A friend of mine is interested in photography and I told her to start a photoblog, since I really enjoy it.
But then she asked me: "Why should I get a photoblog? Do I have any use of it?"

I ended up saying it was cool, and told her I would try to get more reasons later.
Therefore I ask you all, can we get a list of the best reasons to start a photoblog?
If people come with suggestions we could get Brandon to set up a site with it or something. Or just maybe in the Photoblogs.org Wiki. People can easily find out how to make one, but not often why...

So give me some reasons, people!

Edit:

Reasons(from your comments):
- A great way to document your life
- It's easy, cheap and interesting
- Motivation, a reason to go out and photograph!
- Easy to see improvements
- No difference if you're beginner or professional
- Great for feedback and response.
- You have to think new and creative to "feed" the blog.
- A reason to get out of bed each day!

I think there were more, but this is what I had time to write.
Got any more? Should I create a section at the Wiki about this? Or is this post enough?
Thanks for the great response.

Roll Your Own...

Fri, December 3rd, 2004 by Cameron

After reading Newsfeeds: Worthwhile? on this blog - absorbing, initially being skeptical and finally being converted to the idea of RSS feeds ~ I decided to make one for my photoblog, not having a photoblog engine that generated a feed automatically.
After a few false starts I eventually got it together, so I thought I should share my learning experience on the Wiki for those who may be similarly inclined.  So here is the link:

Well, no, you're not going to find street scenes, but there are a lot of nice shots. (Via MetaFilter.)

World AIDS Day

Wed, December 1st, 2004 by this is diopter

Today is World AIDS Day.

In June of 2004 I spent some time in Uganda. While there, I had the opportunity to observe (and the honour of being allowed to photograph) an HIV / AIDS outreach team working with patients in rural Uganda. I've put some of these online in a series entitled AIDS in Uganda.

HIV is one of the biggest social, economic and health challenges in the world. It is a global emergency claiming over 8,000 lives every day. 5 people die of AIDS every minute. AIDS does not discriminate on grounds of age, gender, ethnicity or creed. It can infect anyone. It can infect you. Don't take risks. Don't share needles. Use a condom.

Card publishing software

Wed, December 1st, 2004 by JamesK

I was thinking of making Christmas cards this year instead of buying a load as usual, using my photos; as a starting point. Does anyone know of any software, preferably free for a poor student(!), that allows you to do this easily?

I've tried making cards using MSWord but have issues priniting to the edge of the page - is this a separate problem? (I've tried making page margins "0" which doesn't solve it)

Thanks!
