The Way We See It

Fri, February 25th, 2005 by richard partridge

The Way We See It is a new site where every week a group of photographers visit and capture a different part of London in their own inimitable style. The project aims to see how differently people view and perceive the same place through the lens.

Next week, from 03.03.05 until 07.03.05 I will be in New York and was wondering if there's any interest in running a special 'The Way We See it' in conjunction with the usual London one, whilst i'm there. If there's a good response to this and someone can come up with a suggestion of a place (central Manhattan please!) - then i'll set the project up .... take a look at what we've been doing by visiting www.thewayweseeit.org

Going Weekly

Thu, February 24th, 2005 by Kjetil M. Bergem

I have been running a photoblogs for some months now, and have almost posted a photo each day, but some difficulties with computer/server/having photos to post, have made this impossible.

Anyway, now I haven't posted in almost 3 weeks and I have thought alot about what I should do next, why I do this, and if I need to post each day.
I don't think I have many visitors left, but I want to keep them as good as I can, therefor I am considering to change my way of posting photos.

I have used to have 1 photo per page, but I think I will switch to post many at the same time.
What would have been good for me, since I am a busy man, and don't always have time to take photos, I could start posting photos 1-2 times a week, but then post many photos.

My question to you all must be, do you think this will affect the way my visitors think about my site? Will the come more if they know I post a lot of photos at once, or will they just stop to come?
Things will be easier for me for I don't have that pressure each day, and I can post photos from the same place as a serie or something.

What do you think?  What I do know is that I will have to re-write many templates...which I do not look forward to.

Your Camera Does Not Matter

Thu, February 24th, 2005 by bradknapp

Yes, I stole this link from Kottke, but it's very interesting and relevant. Ken Rockwell has an interesting diatribe on why Your Camera Does Not Matter  and how even the most primitave camera can outshine a $10,000 lens. Something that I've been thinking about lately. It's not the camera, it's the eye. Read. Discuss

Chicago Photobloggers March Madness meetup

Wed, February 23rd, 2005 by mr bill

March Madness is arriving, so in the spirit of the coming arrival of spring, the next Chicago Photobloggers meetup will be Sunday, March 13 at 9 am at the:

New Maxwell Street Market
W. Canal and S. Roosevelt Rd.
Chicago

We'll do our now traditional shootout first. While the new (improved?) Maxwell Street Market may not be the one of old (heck, it's not even on Maxwell Street anymore), it still provides plenty of opportunities for people and street photography.

Afterwards, we'll meet for brunch at one of Ferocious Nick's favorite places:

White Palace Grill
1159 S. Canal
Chicago, IL 60607

For more details, check out the Chicago Photobloggers website.

And the Lunacy Continues

Tue, February 22nd, 2005 by Thomas Hawk

Stay Free Daily is reporting that Christo's publisher is threatening to prosecute anyone who sells their own original photographs of his mass public art installment, The Gates, currently on display in New York's Central Park.

"Christo's publisher claims a vast new degree of
copyright and trademark protection. They claim they will prosecute
anyone who sells their own original photos of The Gates;
who makes and sells a drawing of The Gates or who even uses the words,
The Gates, without their permission....They also claim to have an
agreement with the media that media sources may only use news photos of
the gates for the period the installation is up. That after that the
media will only be allowed to use "official" photos of The Gates."

First the Eiffel Tower, then the Bean in Chicago.  Quite simply unbelievable.  PUBLIC ART folks.  Although I'm not in New York to take photos of this installment right now I'd love to see Christo try and sue me.

Photogs of the World Unite

Tue, February 22nd, 2005 by Thomas Hawk

SFist: Photogs Of The World: Unite! So
Jackson West's organized photo shoot went off without a hitch on
Saturday. SFist has been covering the ongoing question of photography
within the SF Muni system and it is nice to see that that Jackson and
20 or so other photographers were allowed to have their fun on
Saturday. Derek Powazek has a very nice photo of Jackson from the protest (god I wish I could take photographs like that guy).  Here is a link to Muni's response to Steve Malik,
the original photographer harrased by the cops. Personally I think they
should be more explict about photography being permitted in Muni.
Although I've never had a problem taking photos in Muni, it was nice to
see people respond and draw attention to Steve's problem and the issue
of public photography in general.

For those who enjoy participating in photo memes, here's a new one to add to your list:

Self-Portrait Day

The site actually goes live next Thursday, so things are still in the very early stages.

This new camera incorporates many new features introduced with the EOS 20D and also enables control of settings as requested by EOS 300D owners. The default body color is now black, although a silver body will be available. Key points: 8mp CMOS, 3fps 14 frames, DIGIC II, smaller, lighter, custom functions, selectable metering & AF mode, USB 2.0 Hi-speed, lower introductory list price (US: $899 body only, Europe: €899 body only).

More here

Looks like a 20D with a plastic body.

Would Canon take my 300D and give me this one....? :/

Update on SF Muni Photography Woes

Wed, February 16th, 2005 by Thomas Hawk

SFist: Muni Photography Ban: Update:
SFist is out with an update on Tuesday's story regarding Steve Malik's
run in with the police over his taking photographs in San Francisco's
Muni. Unfortunately it does not appear that the situation is any
clearer than it was two days ago.

I was hoping that Tuesday's
story was indeed just the result of an overzealous cop but it appears
that a few other bloggers are confirming that they have had similar
experiences with SF Muni and the response SFist received from Muni
themselves is less than clear on the subject.

I have to add again that I've personally taken hundreds of photo in SF Muni and have never been hassled once.

Although
SFist reported that they combed the MTA website, SFPD website, CalTrans
website and the USA Patriot Act they claim that they could find nothing
prohibiting photography inside Muni. This being said, Maggie Lynch of
the MTA press office did respond to their request on the issue with a
fairly discouraging clarification, "For both safety and security
reasons we require that a request be made to our Agency in advance of
any filming on Muni Property." SFist added that although they had asked
Lynch specifically what regulations govern filming and photography on
Muni platforms, Lynch did answer this question. It is very discouraging
that someone from Muni would seem to suggest that some kind of request
be formally submitted and made prior to photographing in Muni.

A performer in a downtown SF Muni station taken last October.

Although
I understand that without an actual ban being proposed in San Francisco
that this may not seem as important an issue as it might otherwise. At
the same time, however, I think that there is value in building a
public awareness that public photography in all of it's form is indeed
legal.

Too many photographers have been hassled over the years
over what should be a well-known and regarded right. It is especially
egregious when those that are in positions of authority display this
ignorance and this is why I personally feel so strongly about this
issue.

SFist is organizing a mass photo shoot at the
Embarcadero station Muni fare gate this Saturday, the 19th, at noon. It
will be interesting to see the outcome of their little planned
experiment -- unfortunately I've got previous plans to take the family
up to Tahoe. Hopefully their attention to this matter will shed greater
visibility on the issue at hand.

501 Quotes, Questions, and Ponderings

Wed, February 16th, 2005 by Ryan Flynn

A few monts ago I had the pleasure to have dinner with Ian Summers, and attend one of his workshops. I just want to point out his site where you can read about him and what he does and has done. I guess you would call him a creative consultant, and if you ever have the chance to attend one of his workshops, you will leave inspired and enlightened with a big spark of creativity under your ass. This is a really great workshop to evaluate, boost, and learn about your career too. (Yes, ANY career)

You can read his 501 Quotes, Questions and Ponderings here

And visit his site for more info about him and what he does here:

Thanks, Ryan
