Update: 4 April 2005, 8:54 am Pacific Time -- thank you for all your fabulous quotes -- I'll be posting the winner tonight when I get home from work -- stay tuned! Have a great Monday everyone. . . -myla
Craig's post reminded me of the Holga 120 I won on ebay a few months' back. The Holga that has sat on my bookshelf in it's blue/black box untouched. That, as far as I know, has never been used by anyone, ever (although I'm not 100% sure about that, it doesn't look like it's ever been touched tho). The same Holga that I bought because, inspired by the amazing photography of Heather Champ and Gayla Trail (and many others), I thought would be something I would love to explore. And maybe, someday in the future, it will be, but right now I've got my hands full with raising a baby chihuahua (among other things). And so after reading "going, going gone" I was inspired -- and I thought, since there was such an overwhelming response to Craig's original post (I've talked to him about stealing his thunder and he said he's glad I'm going to be doing this too), I thought I would do the same thing with my Holga.
So, wanna win a Holga? For FREE? Keep reading. . .
Same ~"rules"~ apply (I'll even pay for shipping, and yes, I'll even ship out of the States) -- there are only two (very, quite painless I can assure you) caveats to this drawing, the first one is mandatory to enter, the second one is optional:
(1) if you want to enter to win this Holga, you have to leave a comment on this post, too; and
(2) for those of you who know me, you know I love inspirational quotations. So with your post, although it's not required it would be nice if you would submit your favorite inspirational quote with your post (please be sure to credit the author).
Thank you, Craig, for the great idea!
The drawing will be held on Monday, April 4, 2005, winners announced at Midnight, April 5, 2005 PST.

Here is my quote - it is by Bill Hicks - Deceased Comedian...
"Just a ride. But we always kill those good guys who try and tell us that, you ever notice that? And let the demons run amok. But it doesn’t matter, because it’s just a ride. And we can change it anytime we want. It’s only a choice. No effort, no work, no job, no savings and money. A choice, right now, between fear and love. The eyes of fear want you to put bigger locks on your doors, buy guns, close yourself off. The eyes of love, instead, see all of us as one. Here’s what we can do to change the world, right now, to a better ride. Take all that money that we spend on weapons and defenses each year and instead spend it feeding and clothing and educating the poor of the world, which it would many times over, not one human being excluded, and we could explore space, together, both inner and outer, forever, in peace."

I don't want the Holga, but I couldn't resist contributing the following:

Perhaps not an inspirational quote in the traditional sense of the phrase, but I love it and it does inspire me, so:
"The soul, secure in her existence, smiles at the drawn dagger and defies its point. The stars shall fade away, the sun himself grow dim with age and nature sink in years, but thou shalt flourish in immortal youth, unhurt amid the war of elements, the wreck of matter and the crush of worlds."

Excellent idea to pass along your Holga, Myla...seems like random acts of being selfless are spreading and someone will be shooting more film, which is something I'd hope we'd all do. Good luck w/ that chihuahua of yours!

If you were all alone in the universe with no one to talk to,

This is from the New Yorker profile of Laurence Fishburne. I think it applies to taking photos too.
Acting, to Fishburne, means "being fearless-it's throwing yourself off the bridge." He goes on, "Sometimes it's not appropriate; sometimes it may be wrong. But it's gonna be O.K. You're gonna arrive at something that's true. You're gonna fly. You're gonna catch the right fucking updraft, man, and you're gonna go, 'Oh, oh, yes!-this is what I was trying to do.' "

There are some pictures that are like that for me, and - though I'm sure I fail miserably 99.9% of the time - it's my mission in life to bring some of the agonizing torpidity and unfulfillable longing into the lives of others. Did I say that out loud? Sorry. I also never pass up an opportunity to throw that quote out, so there you go.
I guess I don't really want a Holga either. Unless you can fill it with whiskey before you put it in the mail. If you can do that, then count me so very in.
