I know he's like P.E. No. 1 in some places, but what the hell. Let's just say that this one is all about the pictures.

P.E. ???

This is the perfect example of how a great photoblog can only be on 7 people's favorite lists (counting me who just added him). Even after this extra exposure, only seven? It's tough when you don't have any cat photos on your blog. Anyway Matt, DO tell what has made him Public Enemy #1.

Ed, Brooks is correct in his assesment of P.E. = Public Enemy.
Brooks, I only know Grant via his online persona; I've never exchanged emails with him, let alone spent any real physical time with him, like Ed has. So what I know about Grant in the context of a particular online 'community' I can sum up by saying that basically there are some people who strongly believe (as I do) that things like cameras and film (and even exposure and focus and appropriate shutter speeds) don't matter, and what matters is only the pictures and the feelings that the pictures convey. Some people can be painfully direct when expressing this view, much to the irritation of other people who get off on things like build quality and 'bokeh' (Did I spell that right?), and then so the first (smaller, it would seem) group who is all about the pictures sometimes keeps reminding the second (exasperatingly large, in my mind) group that all that matters is the pictures no matter and regardless of the fact that fondlers and dilettantes will always be fondlers and dilettantes. Hackles get risen, words become coarser and more personally directed, ad homimemism ensues, etc.
In all honesty, I was not there at the time of the final and back-breaking straw that got him tossed, and I didn't get a chance to sift through all of the juicy details before they were electronically vaporized, so I can't actually fill you in on any of that.
Anyway, the internet - like just about any place else - seems to be an incestuous and cliquish place, and I don't know if that has anything to do with the less than stellar performance here (consider the quality and depth - especially the depth - of the pictures from Grant and Ed and so forth and then take a look at the relative quality and depth of the pictures on some other sites and then plot that against, say, popularity on the x-axis and ask yourself, 'wtf?'), and yes, it is tough when you don't have any cat pictures, which personally I find completely absurd.
I know it's not a competition and it's all completely subjective, but... Thomas Kinkade, indeed.

Thanks Matt, I see. Very well constructed explanation. Well, he very well may be a d*ick, but his pictures are still great. I don't have to talk to him when I chack out his blog.
What's funny is that whenever I hear talk of content over craft, or whatever you want to call it, the craft of the person making the statement is usually top notch. I didn't see any badly exposed or "printed" images on his blog. I even felt that many where better in the technical department than the content department. To each his own.

well, it's obvious from grant's site that he has a really, really expensive camera.

one things for certain, you can't walk in to a pig sty, be honest with the pigs by telling 'em they stink like sh*t and then come out smelling like a rose yourself....
