I'm heading down to New York again in a few weeks, but I'm not sure if I should take my D70 with me. Tis a hard decision to make... Coolpix 5400 or D70.. It almost makes me want to cry when I use my Coolpix after the D70, but I dont want to lose it in NY.

    great news :)

That's great news indeed. I don't live in NY, never been there either. But if they start to put funky laws like that in NY, it'd only be a matter of time before the same funky laws creep their way into my neighborhood.

Raffi -- why wouldn't you take your DSLR to New York? Not sure what city you live in, but it's no different than walking around any other large city with a camera. I'm sure you're quite conscious of where your camera is at all times right now, so chances are you'll be even more aware in a different atmosphere.

I just came back from New York last weekend and had no problems at all. I shot in the subway system like crazy and nobody said a single word to me. Didn't hide the fact that I was shooting, either.

Also, everyone and their dog had DSLRs out when I was there, so I wouldn't be too concerned about having it stolen. ;)

  7. Raffi Says:

Carrie -- Well I'm from Toronto. My camera is relatively new so I'm a little more cautious about it than most people would normally be. Plus the fact that I'm not exactly big and bulky to look like I can beat on whoever takes my camera or anything.

But thanks for the comment, it's nice to hear from someone who's actually been to NYC with a DSLR and lived to tell about it. ;) heh

Travis Ruse is soooooooooooooooooooooooo lucky! :)

    hey raffii,

why have a dslr if you're afraid to take it to the places you want to take pics at? I live in NYC and take my 20D with me EVERYWHERE.. enjoy the city.

  10. Raffi Says:

Hah well it's really my friends and family that are putting this paranoia into my head that I'm gonna get mugged in NYC. *sigh*

  11. Smallest Photo Says:

Raffi - Having grown up in NYC and moved abroad I can tell you I am so looking forward to the day when I can get back there and walk around with a DSLR. Sure you need to be aware of your surroundings but that's something you should really do anywhere.

  12. lane Says:

    Especially Manhattan. It's a pussy-cat.

  13. Carrie Says:

Raffi -- oh right, I forgot you live in T.O. Quite honestly, I felt just as safe walking around NYC with my camera as I do here in T.O. Just keep it in your bag when you're walking around and pull it out when you're ready to use it (although you'll definitely have it out of your bag more than in). Seriously, even if it's your friend's camera, you'll be fine. Plus, if there are times you're going out and you don't feel comfortable taking the camera, you can always lock it in a hotel safe or locker.

I was already to start a "get me out of jail" kitty going. In the wake of the MTA decesion I've heard from people all over the world about the story getting reported in local papers. Photography in the subways strikes such a cord with everyone. It's almost like a national pastime. I think we were all a bit surprised to see the MTA admit that the ban was a bad idea. And I've never had a piece of equipment stolen from in NYC. And I've photographed in some very, very shady places.

  15. Raffi Says:

Heh I guess most people don't find any value in taking cameras.

Although I would love to take my D70, I resolved to take my Coolpix. Especially since I've been getting split opinions on whether or not I should take it. I'm actually going to talk to a few people to see if I can borrow their cameras while we are there (since they are coming along anyways).

Thanks for the input though, everyone.

  16. Dan Says:

wow are you serioius? i wouldnt call myself a photographer and not have the balls to take my f'n slr to a city. there are people in a LOT worse places that new york. heh. i cant believe your having this issue. if your sooo worried about personal effects, even if it is a nice camera then your not worthy of taking good pictures. period.

  17. paolo Says:

I had so much fun shooting in NYC (above and underground) with my d70s, that I'm really sorry to have spent only 7 days there.
How could anybody think to go to NYC without his/her best camera?

  18. Jake Says:

Well, I've been debating whether or not to bring my D50, but I guess I will! I can't wait to shoot with my new wide-angle lens :-D

  19. china Tours Says:

I love the "giving" I'm doing something similar on a local level...
