Execrable Online Buying Experience

Wed, November 30th, 2005 by Miles

"I will make sure you will never be able to place an order on the internet again." "I'm an attorney, I will sue you." "I will call the CEO of your company and play him the tape of this phone call." "I'm going to call your local police and have two officers come over and arrest you." "You'd better get this through your thick skull." "You have no idea who you are dealing with."

These are all direct threats that I received today from an individual who identified himself as Steve Phillips, the manager of PriceRitePhoto in Brooklyn, New York when I called to inquire about my order with them. My crime? Telling him that I planned to write an article about my unfortunate experience with his company regarding the camera order I had placed with him yesterday."

Read the full article over at Thomas Hawk's blog.

I rather think the abusive salesman at PriceRitePhoto had no idea who he was dealing with when he tried to strong-arm Thomas Hawk. A compaint is on file with the New York Attorney General's office and outraged internet users have flooded the company with phone calls, emails, and even DOS attacks. None of these tactics are at Thomas' direction of course, but it's easy to understand the indignation when you read about the way Thomas was treated by this store. Not only was he repeatedly threatened, but the salesman even had the affront to call and harrass Thomas' boss!

It is simply unbelievable that a company could behave like this, and expect to make money doing it. It makes you wonder how many people have been pressured into spending far more money than they wanted to by unscrupulous companies like PriceRitePhoto. It really is a staggering story. If crooked salesmen are trying this pressure scam on the kind of people who would buy a Canon 5d, people who you would think, like Thomas, are well aware of what accessories they need or don't need, then I hate to imagine how many less well informed people have been taken in when buying consumer electronics over the internet.

If it wasn't for the overwhelming response of the blogging community, who have risen to challenge this assault on one of their own with such energy and commitment, this would be a sad sad story. It's wonderful to think of this bully being put so firmly in place by the defiance of ordinary people, an uplifting tale from the digital trenches.

Now it seems that picking on Thomas Hawk will be the last thing this company does.

For a play by play on developments check out Thomas' original post and the commentry on Digg.com.

Every day we will be selecting an outstanding photoblog post from the images bookmarked as 'photoblog-posts' at del.icio.us and highlighting it here as our post of the day. We're looking for recent posts from sites registered with photoblogs.org that have really stood out to you as exceptional.

Using del.icio.us couldn't be easier:

  1. Register an account if you don't have one already (it's free and easy!).
  2. Enter a link to bookmark your favourite photoblog post.
  3. Tag that link with 'photoblog-posts'.
  4. Repeat 2 and 3 as necessary!
  5. Check the bookmarks from all users to see what people are selecting, it's a great way to browse photoblogs.

You can of course use del.icio.us for a lot more than tagging photoblog posts, it's a great way of creating, sharing and finding links on just about any subject! Please don't use the photoblog-posts tag to bookmark your own work!

There are quite a few photoblogs.org members using the photoblog-posts tag already, but we'd like to see a lot more!

7x7ers get Flak

7x7

Can't make it to Chicago for the 7x7 exhibit? Have no fear. Point your browsers to Flak Magazine, the online journal of art and media, where they've just published a review of the exhibition and a virtual gallery of the work of its participants: Mitch Arsenie, Nick Campbell, Archie Florcruz, Nick Feder, Pablo Korona and Brian Milo, and Bill Vaccaro.

There's also audio commentary -- in the form of an MP3 podcast feed -- of each of the participants work as well.

Next Steps for This Blog

Fri, November 11th, 2005 by Brandon Stone

As you've likely noticed, we've been doing some renovations around here on the blog. I'm happy to say that the move went quite smoothly. And now that we've finished with that, we get to decide on the future of things. Fortunately, we're going to have some major help in our corner...

I'd like announce that Miles Storey will be the new "head blog guy" around here. If you're lucky enough to know Miles, you also know that he is a very level-headed, kind, and talented person. I'm proud to call him a friend and I know he'll be a great addition to the blog. He has full admin privileges and will help to keep things in order around here.

We've also got a few things on our to do list...

  • All the existing editors need to have their accounts set up again. (Right now no one can post here except for me and Miles.) We'll get everyone set up again, but this will take some time.
  • In the meantime, we'll create a simple form where anyone can submit a story for the blog. Submitted stories will go to our growing pool of editors, who will then decide whether or not to post them.
  • We'll also give this blog a graphical makeover to be consistent with the future Photoblogs.org look-and-feel.
  • After we finish with that, we'll do some tweaks here and there to make things a little more useful.

I'm really happy with the way things are moving and I'm excited to see what's next over the horizon. If you have any comments or suggestions, as always, we're happy to hear them.

chat.photoblogs.org

Wed, November 9th, 2005 by Brandon Stone

I'd like to announce a new experiment for Photoblogs.org. We've set up a place to chat:

chat.photoblogs.org

For those of you who are familiar with IRC, you can also access this via Freenode channel #photoblogs.org.

I'd like to thank Jules and Arnaud for hosting the IRC web client at chat.photoblogs.org. They were able to very quickly get it up and running. It will be interesting to see where this leads!

A New Era for Blog.Photoblogs.org

Sun, November 6th, 2005 by Brandon Stone

I've moved this blog off of TypePad. It's now hosted on my server using WordPress. I'll post more about the switchover (and the future of this blog) once I'm done testing things.

In the meantime, let me know if your RSS is still working, etc. I've tried to set it up so that you won't have to change any settings in your feed readers.

Also, if you get a chance, post a comment to test things out.

New server!
