A new trend has been developing for HDR images on photoblogs...

Great response, Sarah ---

heh, yeah, sorry, it's High Dynamic Range, where several images of a scene with different exposures are combined to make a single image with all areas 'correctly' exposed, an image that's impossible to expose with a single shot.
People seem to be using a plugin from here, http://www.hdrsoft.com

Didn't Ansel Adams do this like... fifty years ago or something? The man was always ahead of his time...

Aha! I've done that several times myself... hmm ... feeling very self-satisfied now

Is that how it's done. I've seen a few images around the way that I was quite intrigued at the dynamic range, almost as though people where shooting in 48 bit, which I suppose they are in a way.
The images take on an almost painterly feel, photography has never been able to match the tonal range in the same way a painting can, it's looking like it can now.
The future is now.

Miles: thanks for the mention. I've had a lot of fun producing the HDRs I've put up over the last few days and it's definitely a technique I'd recommend people try out.

I have tried this technique and though I couldn't really control the proccess of the software the result was astonishing. On the other hand it might be like most of these visual effects, used too much for a small period of time and then be forgotten and out of fashion. Anyway I think HDR deserves a little attention as well as a little time and patience.

i think HDR is produces interesting results but I think that digital photography is so much more than that. I don't have an answer to what digital photography really will become but I think of HDR as one step above selective colorization.

Hopefully in the not too far future camera sensors will have more "HDR" or dynamic range built in. I would love to have more control over shadows and highlights.
