National Geographic Photo Contest

Sat, March 11th, 2006 by Miles

National Geographic are holding a themed monthly contest for user submitted photographs called 'Your Shot', a chance to see your image in the pages of National Geographic! This is the first time that the magazine has published 'consumer photos'. You can see this month's winner here and the next theme is "Where I Live."

The rules of the contest are quite strict, in keeping with the magazine's professional reputation; post processing must be kept to a minimum, you must have releases for any people or artwork visible in your shot, and if the photograph was taken on private property then you must have a release from the landowner. Sample releases can be downloaded from the site.

Good luck!

--"you grant to National Geographic Society and its subsidiaries and licensees (the "NGS") a royalty-free, worldwide, perpetual license to display, distribute and reproduce the Photograph, in whole or in part, in any medium now existing or subsequently developed for editorial purposes without further review or participation from you"--

they are sure asking for a lot

  2. Mark Armbruster Says:

It makes me wonder why if the photo you submit is worth that type of licensee agreement to them, then why arent they paying you for it?

  3. Mute Says:

I see this is an opportunity, not some sort of trick to get free photographs for their magazine.

If you consider yourself a professional I assume you'd be submitting images to their photo-editor, not entering contests aimed at amateurs.

  4. Ryan Says:

I don't think it is a trick at all...and yes you are correct, ametures should not be worried about giving away their rights

  5. Mute Says:

Well, not worry about giving rights to an image away in a contest like this, I think the reward is worth it. Some contests I've seen demand exclusive use of the image.

  6. Ryan Says:

Yeah yeah, thats what I'm saying. Its not a "right or wrong" issue, its just that people should do the research and see if it is worth it to them.

  7. Mute Says:

    Exactly.
