Nikon D80

Thu, July 27th, 2006 by Miles

So the new Nikon being teased on Nikon sites around the world is, according to popular reports, the new D80. The important factor will be price, with 10.2mp it will be strong competition for the Canon 30d (approx US$1250) and Nikon will be looking to keep the price low to compete with the Sony A100 ($900). At the same time Nikon can't undercut their own D200 model (approx US$1700) by too much. One of the possible restrictions on the D80 could be that it only uses SD memory cards, like the D50.

Is that a dust bunny on the sensor?

  2. Jeff Ambrose Says:

Ew only SD cards? That's a bit of a turnoff for me right there.

  3. mikhail Says:

sd card are too small, me dont like them

  4. Mute Says:

The SD cards thing is just a rumour based on the fact that, without some restrictions, this camera is going to steal a lot of sales away from the far more expensive d200.

  5. wimbou Says:

It's no rumour, it's true as the door of the memory compartment is to small to fit CF. Welcome to the future D80 ;-) Most people see the D80 as an upgrade for the D50 so this choice makes sense. So the talks about a D90 may be true and this one may be the D70s upgrade with CF???

Looks like it could be a great camera the D80 and a good alternative to the Sony A100.

What is the deal with SD vs CF?
Both are memory cards and both serve the purpose well. With time and R&D the SD cards will reach the acceptability levels of CF too. And once you're buying a $1000 camera puttin in another $100 for memory shouldnt be a worry now should it?
Too many people talk about small SD cards and what not. I infact prefer SD to CF as most laptops today come with built in sd card slots which make my life easier.

  7. JohnK Says:

Good point Saurabh. I have a D50 and I use the SD card in my laptop which has the SD slot, and it is very convenient. No extra accessories on the road for me!

  8. Matt Turner Says:

I presume the deal with SD vs CF is speed.
If you don't mind waiting a few more moments between shots then it's not that big a deal.

  9. kamborio Says:

Mt D70 is two years old and I was starting to think in buying a D200, but the price was putting me off.

I don't know how much difference will make a 10MP vs. a 6MP, technically the actual resolution is only increased a 30% I am actually looking forward another features such as fps (3 is too low) and maximun amount in buffer of RAW files.

And it looks as if its gonna have a AF button!!! That'll be sweet.

Will be the viewfinder bigger? That's another thing that they should improve, compared to the D70.

I think that choosing SD cards instead of CF is a good decision. I bought an adaptor CF to SD that I currently use on my D70. The reasons for that are:

I can share the SD cards between my PDA and the camera
I can insert the SD cards straight on the computer
Despite CF cards are not too big, I rather carry the smaller SD.

  10. william andrew Says:

will the D200 owners not feel 'STITCHED', if the D80 comes out at around £900

  11. Mute Says:

That's what I've been thinking. According to the English pricing, which was leaked, the d200 will be about 75% the price of the 30d and no doubt stiffer competition than the d70. The d200 is far more than the price of the d80, with the same sensor I can't see many people thinking that the extra money for the d200 is worthwhile. Some people will, those who value the extra features (faster shooting, some flash controls, etc), but for most people it just won't be worth it.

    The price I saw for the d80 was £700, the 30d is £850, the d200 £1150.

  12. Karl Says:

    Hi,
interesting is the starting price. D70 started a 1,200$ for the Body. D80 starts with about 999$!

    Karl

  13. Karl Says:

I do not know the feature comparison of D200 and D80. If you are a professional photgrapher the price is not what really counts. Means to me that D80 will not be a competor for D200 User group but will bring some nice features from it to the consumer class.

    Karl

  14. Karl Says:

    Last thought ;-)
if there are really some D200 components used then in future the D200 will be a lot cheaper due to higher production ratings of it's components.

    really last thought!

I'm giving free hot dogs buns and ketchup for those D200 "I have to own it" owners (like my buddy Paul)
to help them "eat" and digest theirs Nikon D200 recently purchase for over $1,6000.00 "plain vainilla)

    Nikon dit it again, isn't?

May I suggest you guys to seat and wait for Fuji's Pro move

  16. J D Patterson Says:

    SD card? Bad.
    Everything else, pretty darn good.
Better pro back-up than the D70 or D70S? Smart money says maybe at best.
When is this bloody dodgeball event between Nikon and Canon going to end? These two biggies better watch out - while they are battling away, another savvy and hungry tech-rich camera manufacturer is going to sneak up and pass them both!
    You betcha.

  17. PJ Photography Says:

If you all want to buy a plastic body camera to go do a job and some of your clients guest show up with the same or better camera, don't feel like your just starting out taking photos and can't afford a real pro camera. Is just the your brain is not working to well. Wait and save your $ to buy a real pro camera, look and feel like a pro.
P/S I herd all the pro photographers are selling there pro cameras and buying 6 or 7 D80 and when the plastic bodys on the D80 brakes or the lens sits bent all they have to do is pick up a new D80 to finnish the job. (just ask my friend pastor about plastic bodys on both of his cameras) Use the brain god gave you and don't mess up someone's wedding

BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA BLA

By the way Paul, do you like mustard on your camera or just ketchup? ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

  19. PJ Photography Says:

D200 Durable, Magnesium alloy (Mg) body: Nikon's advanced technologies and mechanisms are housed within a rugged, lightweight magnesium alloy chassis and body ready for the most rigorous of assignments. Additional sealing for dust and moisture add to the D200's strength
Just because someone may not have the money to buy a mag body camera does not make the D80 better or the same. Give it up. The D80 was made to kill Canon's D30, D80 is a better then the D30 but not as Strong and durable as ANY Mag body camera. Give it up
P/S Pastor drop the S2 AGAIN on your foot and I'll drop my D200 and less see how they came out.

  21. Rohit Says:

Am I missing something here or D80 has almost all the features of D200. The only difference seems to be 420 segments RGB Color Matrix in D80 while D200 has 1005 segment RGB Color Matrix. I wonder if that’s a big deal. Apart from that I think it’s almost the same as D200. Anyone who does not want a Magnesium alloy body (most of the people do not need it except for some professionals), D80 seems like the right choice to me.

  22. Mute Says:

Nikon are definitely taking a big chance with their line up here, partly because they need to compete with Sony no doubt, but you have to wonder what they'll do with the d200, whether it'll get a quick upgrade to 14mp or 16mp, or whether it'll be left as a marginal product for those who thing it's worth paying an extra $700-800 for those few extra features.

It also puts the 30d in something of a bad light. If you're not invested in glass it's hard to think of reasons why you'd pay $300 more for the Canon. It does have better low light performance and the better body, which can help with how good a camera 'feels' to use, but still, it's getting tight in the market and there are still more new SLRs to come from manufacturers relatively new to the sector.

  23. J.A. Bolton Says:

Well I must say, reading all your comments has really put someone in my position in a great deal of confusion!! I am new to photography and was leaning toward the D80 or the D200, but really cannot come up with a reason to buy one camera over another. I hear some pros work with the D50 and thats all they need. All I can say is.... there are way too many choices and not enough benefits between them all!!

Is it really the camera that needs to be good or the photographer? Many have said that a really good photographer can take amazing shots with just about anything put in his or her hands.

  24. Rohit Says:

    Hello Bolton,
I would say just factor in the money. I always say if you can afford it…buy it. According to me it’s true even if you do not need some features right now. I mean there is no reason to not to buy a D200 right now if its easily affordable (unless you are specifically looking for lighter and smaller camera). A lot of time I hear people speaking out against such purchase and generally the logic goes….
    1. You don’t need those features, only professional need then.
    2. You don’t need expensive camera to make great photograph
    3. A lot of professionals use D50 ….and so on.

All the above point is true and I agree with it.

However if one can easily (mind you I say easily) afford a D200 or other more expensive model then I really do not think there is any harm. In fact most of the professional cameras are bought by rich armatures. If tomorrow hobbyist and these armatures stop buying these cameras Cannon and Nikon will be in a big trouble.
So if one can afford to indulge, then just go ahead.

For those who are more sensitive to cost, yes D50 is a good deal and most will be satisfied with it. Check out its features and if you think you do not need the extra features of D70 or D80 then go for it.

One more point to consider is, how long you wish to keep the camera before you are ready to replace it. In case you want to stick with it for a long time say next 4 to 5 years then go for a D80 if you can afford it. You may not need the extra features right now but in future as you grow into photography then you might need it.

Finally in case anyone is going for a D50 may want to wait a bit because most probably a new entry level camera might be introduced soon which will be to D80 what D50 was to D70.

    Rohit

  25. J.A. Bolton Says:

Thank you so much for you reply, Rohit. You have helped me make that decision to go for the D200 while I can or I should say while I have the money.

    Thanks!!

i enjoyed everyone's replies. My favorite one is from Rohit.
I love the part where he says"So if one can afford to indulge, then just go ahead."
I believe he has a very good point.I also agree with the part were he says most pro cameras are purchased be "rich" amatures.
