Post a picture of a cat day.

Thu, September 30th, 2004 by photojunkie

Last year Ross and Joey put together the first annual "post a picture of a cat to your blog" Day. Tomorrow, (aka Friday) is the second annual aka BlogACatMas.

On my roadtrip to Austin and back I visited numerous cats on my travels. I was allergic to each and every one. Maybe I will post a few through out the day.

Link Viewer for Skylines Meme

Wed, September 29th, 2004 by Cameron

Well, Stu has given me permission to "go live" with a link viewer page that I put together for his SkyLines meme. You can find it here: Skyline project links viewer After stating it would be good if he presented it in a link viewer format I thought I should do something about it, so I put together a crude one with my limited PHP skills. (If anyone wants to give me hints to make this page more user-friendly feel free!)
There is also a submission form that notifies both Stu and myself when you submit a skyline, so it will be updated on both Stu's site and on the SkyLine Project link-viewer page.
I see that some of our regulars have already submitted some beautiful skylines Andre has submitted Quebec at dusk and James shows us a Sydney skyline to name just two. Thanks to James for allowing me to use a modified version of his Sydney photo for a banner, and thanks to Stu for the idea.

Skyline Project

Sun, September 26th, 2004 by Cameron

Stu Savory, an expatriate Scot living (and blogging) in Germany has started a photo meme on his blog:
Skylines
~ where he is linking to those who wish to share their local views with the rest of the world.
He got the idea when he (quoted from his blog) "had a first-time blog visit from a reader via the Maricopa County (Arizona, USA) domain maricopa.gov... That website has a beautiful skyline displayed in its header. It gave me the idea that we could start a new blog meme, showing each other our respective skylines.
...If you think the view out front is not so great, you can show us the back yard view instead if you prefer. Let's all join in and share our area's skylines...Alternatively, if you have to walk/drive a little way to get to your favourite view, just tell us that it's nearby, but show us anyway. This Earth is a beautiful place; share your view please."
Good idea Stu, although a "link viewer" type arrangement would be a cool implementation for this kind of project.

Lens Day

Fri, September 17th, 2004 by photojunkie

Lensday.com was original planned to alleviate the midweek lack of photo challenges. It will be very much like Theme Thursday and Photo Friday but Mikey (it originator) aka tyd wanted lens day challenges to be different and more challenging.

The first Lens Day photo challenge will begin on Wednesday 09/22/04. If you are interested in participating, sign up for an email reminder.

A Modest Proposal from Photoblogs.org and FILE

Fri, September 10th, 2004 by beerzie boy

Hello, Photobloggers, Beerzie Boy, FILE Magazine editor here. Once again, many thanks to the members of Photoblogs.org who have submitted or participated in FILE. FILE is a collaboration, and without the participation of folks like you, it would wither on the vine.

The point of this post is that Brandon and the editors of FILE Magazine have been discussing a partnership and would like your feedback about what we are thinking.

Basically, what we are thinking of is a partnership in which members of Photoblogs.org could have a setting where they could flag their own site as "I'd like to have my photos featured on FILE Magazine." If someone has that flag set, we would have permission to use photos from their site and feature them on FILE. We would scan these sites for photos that fit into FILE's stylistic approach and post them, and eventually, we may syndicate the photos and post them on Photoblogs.org. All photos selected this way would be protected and credited just as regular submissions to FILE are; for more information on how FILE handles submissions, visit our Submissions page.

This would save us a lot of effort in our solicitation/selection process. While we always -- and gladly -- accept submissions from all photographers, we also spend a lot of time investigating photoblogs and web sites. When we see something we like, we politely request to include it in The Collection. In addition, this would move us towards achieving one of our main goals for FILE, namely, to have a stable of regular collaborators. The benefits for you are that you get a chance to participate in what we feel is a very exciting project with very talented individuals (the photographers, not us), and naturally, you may gain a wider audience for your work.

We already have had several Photoblogs.org members as contributors and are eager to include more. We think that this might be a good way of developing that relationship.

What do you think? We are open to ideas, feedback, criticism.

Where's your protest at?

Wed, September 8th, 2004 by gwen

I'm sure many of you are familiar with Pixos, but in case you're not, it's a community project that groups submissions from around the world under different themes. It's pretty nifty, giving us a more intimate look at how differently (and similarly) people go about their day-to-day lives in different countries.

A few samples: graffiti in Amsterdam, a crowd in Senegal, lunch in Brazil, heat in the Phillipines, hidden in Sydney, a sign in San Francisco, height in Nepal, noise in Tel Aviv, working in Jakarta

Now that you're filled in: The point of this post was not so much to spotlight Pixos as to pass along founder Gregor's request for submissions to the Protests in... theme; he's extended the deadline by a week to allow those of you who've been off on summer (or winter ;) vacation some extra time to get yours in. I've seen tons of amazing photos lately from the RNC protests, and I know New York isn't the only town where people are fed up; I'm certain the U.S. isn't the only country where some of us think things could be done better, and I'd love to see what's going on in your neck of the woods.

New Feature on FILE Magazine

Mon, August 30th, 2004 by beerzie boy

I want to thank the readers of Photoblogs.org for their contributions and submissions to FILE. The response -- both feedback and submissions -- have been outstanding.

One of the problems with publishing just one or two images a day is that we are forced to be selective; this means that everyone who would like to participate may not be able to. With this in mind, we have created a new feature on FILE Magazine called Karaoke Camera. Like The Collection, we are looking for images that treat subjects in unexpected ways; unlike The Collection, Karaoke Camera has pre-selected categories so you don't have to try to figure out what that means.

Like a karaoke contest, we play the tune and you sing the words. Anyone may enter as many times as they wish. The only requirement is that you stay on topic, which means, to strain the karaoke metaphor even further, you may not sing the words to "Subterranean Homesick Blues" when the tune is "Papa Don't Preach." The opening categories are "Stumped" and "Wild Carts". We hope everyone enjoys this collaborative project, and if you have any ideas for future categories, were open to suggestions!

FILE: A Call for Submissions

Mon, August 16th, 2004 by beerzie boy

We have started a meme, FILE Magazine, that several of Photoblog.org's members have contributed to and which other members may enjoy participating in. You can see a list of our contributors here, and we have several others in the queue. We post a new image to The Collection every weekday, and we post new galleries as they are accepted.

The purpose of FILE is to collect and display photographs that treat subjects in unexpected ways. Alternate takes, odd angles, unconventional observations - these are some of the ways photographs collected in FILE reinterpret traditional genres. All amateur and professional photographers are encouraged to submit their work. You may submit as often as you like. FILE magazine accepts single images or multiple images with a unified theme. There are more specific details on submissions here.
