WarShooter is a portal/blog for photojournalists involved in covering conflicts. The forums are quiet but the blog is full of behind-the-scenes stories from the 'front'.
As the name suggests this isn't a 'work safe' site, containing uncensored images of war.

Have you seen Filmwasters.com yet?? From the about page:
Filmwasters.com is an amalgamation of blog, online gallery, individual showcase and a forum dedicated to the use of film in photography. It aims to stress the exploration of creativity through film-based photography rather than the 'wheres', 'whys' and 'how-exactlies'; these can be answered in phenomenal detail on so many other photographic web resources. Filmwasters is not camera-type specific - glass, plastic and lensless are all welcome here.
The site is a showcase of the five amazing photographers who started it and a fabulous place to see other work such as Alison Garnett's guest gallery for March 2006. Browse the galleries, ask questions in the forums, read the blog and enjoy the knowledge that for many of us out there, film is not dead.

The legendary photographer/director Gordon Parks dies, age 93.
Parks was a groundbreaking figure in the arts, the first black photograper for Life magazine, best known for his photo-essays of poverty and the civil rights movement, the first black director in Hollywood. He also wrote books, composed and even created a ballet about Martin Luther King.

Canon have today announced the 30d, an update of the 20d.
You can read a detailed preview at dpreview.

It's not as big a jump over the 20d as many people seemed to be expecting, the imaging technology, is unchanged for example. The price looks good, about $1300, and street prices should be lower. It looks like Canon have held off on major improvements over the 20d so the 30d can compete with the Nikon d70s, which make me wonder if there's not a new cropped DSLR coming in below the $2000 mark to compete with the d200. Canon have always been really smart with marketing.
New features of the 30d include:
- Large 2.5" LCD (this seems to be the standard size now)
- More frames in burst mode
- ISO setting in the viewfinder
- 3.5% spot metering
There are also new lenses announced, an 85L mkII (perhaps with improved AF) and a non-L 17-55 EF-S f2.8 USM IS.

The National Press Photographers Association is opening submissions to its annual Best of Photojournalism Awards to photobloggers!
The deadline for entry is February 10.
To quote:
Personal photo sites of amateur photographers that carry on in the tradition of Jacques-Henri Lartigue, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Dr. Erich Salomon of using photography to document our personal lives.
Pictures can be entered in the following 3 categories and must have been organized in a group (like a “flickr†photo set) and shot and posted on the web in calendar year 2005.
1 photo set per category can be entered by a photo blog, with a maximum of 30 pictures per set.
Categories:
1. Portraits
2. Festivals and Events
3. Photojournalism
I think it's great that the role of photobloggers in recording events and life is being recognised by this respected group. I urge as many people to enter as possible, raise the profile of the photoblogging art!
(Thanks for the tip Valerie!)

The OpenRAW project, which is asking manufacturers to drop encryption of RAW data and use a common format, is asking people to fill out a survey on their experiences of digital photography to help them direct their campaign.
There are obvious advantages to having a single RAW format for the end user (there are almost 200 different formats out there now) but it will take a lot to persuade manfacturers to drop what for them is potentially a competitive advantage.

Yesterday Nikon put out a press release stating it's intent to scale back all of its film products to concentrate on digital.
"Nikon Corporation has made the decision to focus management resources on digital cameras in place of film cameras."
Even though they are continuing to manufacture the F6 and FM10 I can't see that lasting very long without a firm commitment to film. Nikon's had great success in the digital market, especially with compact cameras, and that seems to be spelling the end of one of film's greatest proponents.
Will Nikon's existing film users be switching to other systems following this announcement and the uncertainty they must certainly be feeling? Nikons digital SLRs will continue I assume but perhaps future lenses will be digital only.

The online photography magazine ak47 has re-emerged with a new issue for January/February, featuring amongst others Eliot Shepperd of photoblog slower.net. Check it out, I particularly liked the twos and threes series.
