Digital data recovery

Mon, November 8th, 2004 by sxott

I've lost some images. Seems like a good topic for this group. My camera is set for continuous numbering. So, when I put in a new memory card, format it, and take a picture, the camera makes a directory "564CANON" and writes the file "IMG_6433.JPG." When the count reaches IMG_6500, the camera makes a new directory "565CANON" starting with "IMG_6501.JPG"

Ok. So, I get home, pop the card in the computer and there are two directories, but the first directory is empty. Second directory is normal. I know I'm missing at least 50 files. Where have they gone? I pop it back in the camera, put it in review mode, and still missing. I doubt foul play. The camera never left my hand. Nothing out of the ordinary. Just a glitch in the Matrix?

Any suggestions for data recovery?

Printing Services Revisted

Tue, November 2nd, 2004 by Dyanna

First of all, thanks to everyone who responded to my inquiry about Freelancing. Your advice was quite helpful and informative!

Secondly, I'd like to express my satisfaction with WHCC for photo printing. Upon setting up my account, I was asked to submit five photos for 8x10 printing and monitor calibration. I received the prints today and I am so very impressed with the quality and clarity. Their prices are great, and coupled with the super-fast turnaround, it's more than I could have asked for!

Thirdly, I'd like to know if anyone has had success with finding a company to print photo greeting cards. WHCC has a greeting card program, but the cards aren't the folded type - they're the single pane printed on photo paper with or without a greeting of some sort. I'd like to find a company that prints the "traditional" greeting cards, the type which are printed on a folded sheet of quality stock. I know CafePress prints cards, but the pricing is pretty high. If you know of a place that does this sort of printing, please pass along the information.

Happy November, everyone!

Free Personal Hardcover Book

Sat, October 2nd, 2004 by Jessyel Ty Gonzalez

Well, not too sure how many of you will be interested, but I think it warrants a post.

Anyway, there is a website called MyPublisher.com that makes your personalized photography books. You download their publishing software (only takes about a minute), and you can have up to a twenty-page book, with up to 80 photos, for FREE, and that also includes FREE SHIPPING.

It's a current promotion, ends on October 31 (or until supplies last). Enter this promotional code: REFB777 during checkout.

I've tried MyPublisher in the past, and have had some awesome results. I recommend them, hence this posting. A note, however: You'll need high-quality photos; smaller than 3 megapixels won't work too well, but the cool is that their software will tell you which photos can and can't work for publishing.

These are cool for personal, business, gifts, portfolio, etc. use. It's free, so you won't be losing anything, AND past customers are also eligible.

UPDATE: Only Windows users can download their software. But I believe the Mac's iPhoto service used MyPublisher as well. AND, apparently the free shipping applies only towards U.S. customers.

Adobe teams up with Ofoto

Wed, September 29th, 2004 by roderick -

According to this article on news.com Adobe is teaming up with Kodak/Ofoto to make it its preferred printing service in Adobe's consumer level image editing products.

Considering that Heather and others have recently voiced some dissatisfaction with Ofoto, I wonder if this were the best choice for Adobe.

Making a Photography Book

Mon, September 20th, 2004 by Brandon Stone

Has anyone here ever made their own photography book? You know, the pretty coffee table kind that features photos rather than words. On one hand I'd like to know if there are any realistic DIY solutions... On the other hand I'm wondering how plausible it would be to do something on a little grander scale.

Any advice or input you could share? I've had an idea for a while that is starting to become more than just an idea.

Photonotes.org

Fri, September 17th, 2004 by photojunkie

My first jump into the world of SLR cameras was back in 1990 or 1991 when I was in grade 11. I had purchased a Canon EOS Rebel S and was very happy using it for a number of years until present time. It's come with me on many vacations, to many concerts and has taken pictures of many people, both famous and non famous alike.

Recently I have been thinking about upgrading my 35mm SLR for a newer, more feature rich version to compliment my greater understanding of photography. I definitely wanted something better than a consumer level camera, but don't want to pay for an expensive professional body. I've serached ebay and other online sources and even checked up local stores for used equipment. And I easily started getting confused between the different models and different variations of different models. Until today.

I found a site called PhotoNotes.org. It's a wonderful resource with many articles and reviews, especially geared towards Canon EOS users (there are other articles which are good for general usage as well). It was an amazing site to read especially to ease my confusion over the various models released by Canon over the past 15 years since the EOS system was introduced.

What I found upon further inspection of the site, was an online extensive dictionary of film and digital photography. This alone makes the site worth bookmarking.

So if you are a Canon user like myself, or if you need to find a photographic term, This is one site that definitely needs to be checked out.

Enjoy

Ofoto Awful

Wed, September 15th, 2004 by Heather Champ

I've long been a fan of Ofoto as their cost, speed and quality have been attractive. All that has changed with the introduction of their new, non-optional service "Perfect Touch." This new "feature" reviews your photograph and adjusts it to what it (a computer) determines to be the optimal levels, etc.

The results of my recent batch of photographs were very disappointing and I will return them rather than distribute them (it's the September Print Club selection). When I called customers service about the change in quality they told me that they have received a number of similar complaints and are looking into the possibility of disabling this feature. Their current advise for printing is "go somewhere else."

If you've been using Ofoto, or are thinking of using it, be aware that what you see is not what you will get. I was pleased to see that Photoworks here in San Francisco has far more reasonable rates now and I'll check them out, but what other online print services would you recommend?

Digital Printing Services

Sun, May 2nd, 2004 by Brandon Stone

Mosal recently posted a comment asking about Adorama's digital printing service. I've personally never used it, but I'd like to hear if others have. I've had great success with Shutterfly. And I've also heard good things about SnapFish.

What services do you use?
