Announcing the 2006 Photobloggies!

Mon, April 24th, 2006 by Brandon Stone

The Photobloggies are finally upon us! This time around we're a little later in the year, because winners of the 2006 Photobloggies will be announced live at the North American Photobloggers Meetup! We're looking forward to meeting many of you in Toronto over the long weekend of Friday, May 19th, 2006 to Monday, May 22nd for the event.

We've also got a few other changes this year... Most notable is the addition of a judging panel that will pick the final winners. We'll still have open nominations, but this year we've invited editors from the following marvelous photography magazines to judge the final round...

AK47.tv, Bending Light, File Magazine, Gomma Magazine, Hamburger Eyes, JPG Magazine, Light Leaks, Making Room, Mooncruise, Photoblogs Magazine, U&I Mag

We've also rearranged some of the geographical categories based on your feedback from last year. Our goal is to continually make things better, so feel free to let us know what you like and what you'd change for next year.

Now get over there and start nominating some photoblogs!

Update: Small edit to judges names.

Happy merry holidays, etc.

I just wanted to send a quick note to everyone to let you know how much you all mean to me. I'm not really much of a sentimentalist, but I figured it was good to let you know that this whole photoblogging thing has been very fun for me. I can't wait to see what 2006 will bring. Even though I've only met a small fraction of you, I really do think of you as my extended family.

I also wanted to say thanks to Miles for taking over the blog. I enjoy visiting it every day and seeing what he's posted.

It will be nice to get the beta site live and do a facelift on the existing sites.

See you all in the coming year.

-Brandon

December Issue of Photoblogs Magazine Online

Sat, December 3rd, 2005 by Miles

From Matt

The December 2005 issue of photoblogs magazine is now online!

This magazine continues to be a sort of global travel journal, this month starting with the Naadam Festival in Mongolia with David Shirk, then heading over to Venice for a history lesson with Ariela Pelaia; then to the unique streets of Kathmandu with Rod Purcell; over to England for a glimpse into the plight of the Romany Gypsies from Fred Chance's perspective; followed by a trip to Toronto for a look at the flawed beauty captured through the lens of Gary J. Wood; and finally heading south to the Hurricane ravaged Louisiana for a report on the lost pets in the wake of Katrina, as seen by photographer Paul Wood (all photographers are members of the Photoblogs.org community).

There is now both html and pdf versions available, so please stop by and have a look.

Mary Ellen Mark in Pittsburgh, PA

Thu, November 3rd, 2005 by btezra

The Silver Eye Center for Photography is joining with Manchester Craftsmen's Guild to present a free lecture by internationally known photographer Mary Ellen Mark, this Friday, November 4th, 2005, at 6:00 p.m.

She will sign books at a reception following the lecture. Thirty-three of Mark's photographs will be exhibited at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild now through January 8, 2006. These images were selected from those created between 1963-1999 and published in her book MARY ELLEN MARK: AMERICAN ODYSSEY.

Mary Ellen Mark's photojournalism career has been built mostly around magazines. Her photographs and reportorial series have appeared in periodicals worldwide, from Life to Rolling Stone, from Paris Match to the New Yorker.  But what is most recognizable about her photography, her life's work,  is her strongly personal approach with a camera in her hand, she documents the lives of people on the edges of society -- from the prostitutes of Bombay to the street kids of Seattle to the cowboys of small-town Texas rodeos, homeless families, runaway children, mentally ill patients...all subjects who provide a unique glimpse into her vision and talent as a photographer.  What I admire most about her work is the candid intimacy in each of her photographs that is uniquely her own, producing compassionate and complex portraits that remain indelible in my memroy.  Mary Ellen Mark has the ability to capture people with extra-ordinary depth and feeling. Almost without fail, her images are moving. With a skill beyond the normal artist, however, her images have the ability to be thought-provoking.

If you are in/about Pittsburgh, PA I would recommend coming out to the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild to see and hear Mary Ellen Mark speak!

all the best~Craig
